Call to Action: PHP 5.6 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

I’m going to take a break from posting code snippets and how-tos to draw attention to the fact that PHP 5.6 may not be coming to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS by way of Ondřej Surý’s amazing PPA. Yes, you can still compile PHP from source, but as you may already know, using a PPA makes life a helluva lot easier. The reason for omitting Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is that the package will need to be backported to Apache 2.2 and accordingly to Ondřej, it will be a PITA.

Fortunately, he gave us a glimmer of hope that if more people request support for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS he will make the effort. That being said, I need everyone to go +1 the open issue on Github if you are in need of PHP 5.6 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Next, let’s show Ondřej Surý as much love as we can by donating to the project. Remember, this PPA is someone’s personal project and he deserves some compensation for his time and effort. I personally just kicked him 100€ and if you’re utilizing the PPA on your production servers, especially if they are revenue generating, you should consider doing the same.

Comment below after you +1 and donate. I’d love to see our community make a significant impact on this.
